united nations photo competition: the potato

4k veggie

The spud.

French fries, au gratin, scalloped, baked, potato chips…

So many options and the reason why the potato is my favorite, tuberous root vegetable. I even have fond, childhood memories of spud-gun wars with the neighborhood kids.

Apparently the UN (United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization) thinks highly of the potato, too. In celebration of the International Year of the Potato, the UN has announced a photo contest for amateurs and professionals worldwide.

Anyone aged 18 and older can submit up to 8 photos depicting a theme that features the celebrated vegetable. Prizes include: $4000 dollar US and Nikon D300 up for first place in the pro category and $2000 and a Nikon D60 for first place amateur. Deadline to submit your entry is September 1, 2008.

To get more details, rules and submit your entry visit the http://potato2008.org website:
